Rector Announces his Retirement

The Rev. Dr. Prentice Kinser III, Rector of St. James' Church, Montross, and St. Peter's Church, Oak Grove, has announced that he will retire on November 1, 2010. This has been approved by both vestries and by the Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, The Rt. Rev. Shannon S. Johnston.  Dr. and Mrs. Kinser will move to Ashland, Virginia.  He hopes to have time to travel and relax for a while, do some Sunday Supply service, and he may finish another book that has been in the works for a few years.  Click here to see his full retirement letter.

The combined vestries met on July 8 and have begun a process of selecting a Search Committee.  The Search Committee will be composed of four members of St. James' Church and four members of St. Peter's Church.  Details will follow.

Special thanks to Wayland Carter at St. Peter's Church for bringing and wearing all of his
fire fighting outfit (very hot) to help handle the flames of Pentecost at St. Peter's.

And special thanks to Eddie Weston, Chief of the Montross Volunteer Fire Department
for bringing his fire fighting outfit, and thanks to Rob Zimmerman for wearing all of that
equipment (very hot) to help handle the flames of Pentecost at St. James'.

These were very brave souls to follow their half-crazy priest and allow the winds of the Holy Sprit to blow where they might!

About Washington's Camerata

Washington’s Camerata was formed in 2009 and serves as Artists-in-Residence for the historic Washington Parish located at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.  The ensemble, featuring flutists Alicia Kosack, Kelly Kazik, and Sarah McIver, and harpsichordist Elena Tsai, is dedicated to the performance of music of the 17th and 18th centuries and, especially, that of early flutes.  The group’s unique instrumentation and innovative programming bring charming and rarely heard music to life in an historic space.

The current building of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church was consecrated in 1848 to house the Washington Parish, which was first organized in 1661.  The parish was home to the Washington, Monroe, and Lee families.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is located at 2961 King’s Highway, Oak Grove, VA 22443.

For more information, please see their web site at www.washingtonscamerata.com, or email washingtonscamerata@yahoo.com. To contact the church office phone, please call 804-493-8285.

Dr. Kelly Kazik serves as the Organist and Choir Director for St. Peter's Church.  She has noted, "I have been studying baroque music and specifically historical instrument performance for over 15 years.  This music is a passion of mine.  On a personal note, I am a bit of a genealogy enthusiast and am directly related to two patriots of the American Revolution."  She says that "the thought of being able to put history and music together in an authentic space is very exciting!"  The Rector and Vestry of St. Peter's Church are also excited about this addition to our parish music program and the contribution it will make to our community.
